Laundry Room Makeover

So, I’ve finally gotten to the point where I can show you my laundry room makeover.

I can hardly believe that I’m showing you this… the before pictures definitely show how disorganized this space was – it kind of became a dumping ground for cleaning materials, random items, baby things, pool floats, and anything else you can think of.

This is embarrassing… but here’s the before:

As you can see it was a total disaster.  That’s my ironing board set up along the wall, acting as a counter.  Not ideal.

But now, 3 IKEA cabinets, a few hours, and some help from my dad later, it looks like this:

There’s still some organizing left to do, but I think it’s a great improvement!  Even with the cabinets taking up floor space, the room feels bigger to me.

I put together all the cabinets and their innards, and my dad came to help with a few things and he cut the countertop and attached it for me.  He also moved an outlet for me since it was too low on the wall and would have sat behind the cabinets.  The water lines are in a kind of weird spot, so he cut a notch in the far corner for me – near that dust buster – so that they wouldn’t get pinched.

So in addition to the cabinets, I was inspired by something I saw on Pinterest, and decided to do a row of hooks on the right hand wall.  I was just going to paint a stripe on the wall and put hooks on the stripe, but my mom suggested that I use a board instead, which made more sense, since then I could put hooks anywhere I wanted, not just on a stud.

You’ll still see the nails right now – I’m planning to go back and patch and paint over the nail heads… One thing at a time.

Yay you! So inspiring! I REALLY need to tackle our laundry room. A trip to ikea is a must. Can you specify which cabinets you got?

Dina, Thanks! It’s a major victory for me. Yes, I can definitely specify the cabinets!

All of them have the Adel white doors – but as for the cabinets – I got:
1- AKURUM Base cabinet w shelf/2 doors, birch, Ädel white, 30″
1 – AKURUM Base cabinet with wire baskets, white, Ädel white, 24″
1 – AKURUM Base cabinet with pull-out storage, white, Ädel white, 15″

The one with the pull out storage was a little tricky to figure out how to put together – mainly just the drawers. But I eventually figured it out. And the countertop I have came from Lowes. But Ikea sells it too, and if you have room for an 8″ piece of it in your car, it’s definitely more affordable. But either one works.

Also, you can choose whether you want metal feet, or the plastic feet with a toe-kick piece to cover them. I didn’t really care, and since it’s my laundry room and I want to be able to clean under the cabinets, I stuck with the plastic feet and no toe-kick. The metal ones are a lot slicker looking though. I suppose that’s always something I could change later.

Its hard to imagine that an organized laundry room can be so helpful but true. I had the same issue with my laundry room and now that I have it organized it is so much nicer. I even use it as a pantry because I but bulk food and need a place to store everything. Maybe we need to call it the utility room not the laundry room. lol
